Sovereignty diminishes as mass human rights abuses increase

The sovereignty of a nation is at its weakest when the basic human rights of that nation's people are being violated on a mass scale. Some people have defended the Maduro regime on the basis that Venezuela is a sovereign nation, so no other nation should interfere in any way. Maduro himself has claimed that international humanitarian aid is somehow an affront to Venezuela's sovereignty. The reality in Venezuela, however, is that the currency is so hyperinflated that it has a

Support Term Limits for Philadelphia City Council

Philadelphia City Councilmember Allan Domb has announced that he will introduce a bill to limit terms on Philadelphia City Council to three (3) four-year terms. I am in favor of this proposal. I think it's pretty telling that veteran politicians spoke out against the proposed bill just minutes after Domb announced it, according to this article on whyy. My response to Councilmember Curtis Jones's statement that it takes multiple terms to understand how to get things done in C

    Snow Day

Philadelphia Family Court is closed today, due to the snowfall and resulting conditions.

    Source of True Wisdom

"all wisdom was the result of listening to one's own soul." -- Paulo Coelho, By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept, p. 99 I'm pretty sure By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept was the first Paulo Coelho book that I read. Over the years since then, I've read many of his other books. If you're looking for a good, easy read that will help you to reflect on life, then I highly recommend Paulo Coelho. The quote above is really important for this day and age. With people so

    Grapefruit

There's nothing like a weekend morning, in the comfort of your own home, taking a ripe grapefruit, cutting it in half, laying the two halves side-by-side on a plate, taking some sugar in a teaspoon, sprinkling it on top of both halves of grapefruit, taking a special grapefruit spoon, serrated on both sides, digging in to the juiciness of the grapefruit, and eating it one juicy, sugar-topped wedge at a time.

    National Emergency, Not

There is no national emergency at the southern U.S. border. The conditions there have not substantially changed today, or within the past 24 hours, or within the past week, or within the past month, or within any reasonable time frame looking back. As the popular cliché goes, and it applies here: "it is what it is." Nothing has changed. The idea that there's an emergency is an insult to the American people's intelligence. The reality? Trump made a promise that he couldn't

    Don't Forget Parkland

Exactly a year after the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, we must not forget the urgent need for gun control legislation. Not every tragedy can be prevented, but we as a people must admit that there is a gun violence problem that exists on a national scale, and has only gotten worse since the Columbine shooting in 1999. Something has to be done. Laws must be changed. At its simplest, guns should be allowed for hunting and for self-defense. I believe that the right to
"I bless the rains down in Africa!!!"

"I bless the rains down in Africa!!!"

I recently came across Weezer's cover of this song, but the original is so classic that I just had to post it for your listening pleasure. "As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti."

    À la (sicko) mode
