Be Bold, Break the Mold

Think back to a time when you were a little kid, when it was your birthday or Christmas or some other holiday where you got a gift. What's the first thing you wanted to do? Open it up, play with it, and show it off to all your friends, right? Well, it's the same thing with a gift from God. We ought to be "bold" with these gifts, not "shy" in keeping them to ourselves, which can be both selfish and motivated out of fear rather than "love" as God wants.

If you're reading this, then you know I'm a lawyer. And you ought to know that I'm good -- very good -- at what I do. I've been given certain gifts by God, which I'm blessed and thankful to put into use for my clients. In the past, there have been many times when I've been bold with these gifts, but there have been other times when I've been shy, sometimes too shy, with these gifts.

Back when I supervised law students from the University of Pennsylvania Law School (currently ranked #7 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report), I would talk about the triple threat lawyer in family law: a lawyer who can effectively 1) write legal documents; 2) make legal arguments in Court; and in my opinion the most underestimated and yet most important skill: 3) work well with real people in real cases.

I can do all three things well. And I'm not afraid of anybody. My hope and goal every day as a lawyer is that I am "bold and loving and sensible" with these gifts from God, hopefully not in any arrogant sort of way, but firm and confident that I'm very good at what I do. So I'm gonna keep doing it...​
